The Plantation Course at Kapalua

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to use the word plantation in a title anymore. Recent media posts suggest I’m not. I don’t quite know how to avoid it. If cancel culture comes after me I’m ok with that. This post is not a metaphor or diatribe against the racial injustice in the world. I wrote my thoughts on that previously. This is just a post about The Plantation Golf Course at Kapalua.

A Real Greta

I realize that I just lost 50% of my readers by writing about another golf course. I could become a real social phenomenon, a real Greta Thunberg, if I just stopped writing about golf and focused on topics that were actually interesting for others to read about. However, I feel like for every article I read about Donald Trump, Covid-19, Greenhouse Gases, AOC, Cruz, or Cuomo a piece of my soul is ripped away. I will forgo Greta’s fame for now and stick to golf.

Maybe I just lost more readers. Time will tell.

Kapalua

I dreamed of playing the Kapalua golf course ever since my cousin Kyle brought me home a ball marker with the Kapalua logo on it when I was a kid. I thought it must have cost him a lot of money. Little did I know I that they give them away for free. I’ve played my share of golf in Hawaii but I’ve never played a Hawaii course as beautiful as this.

Kapalua Plantation ranks as my 3rd favorite golf course, behind Whistling Straits and Pacific Dunes. Coming in at #22 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 Public Course list, the Plantation course also boasts of being the top rated course in Hawaii.

Pony Up

I was once asked how I get on to play all of these amazing courses. The short answer is you’ll go broke doing it the way I do, paying full price. The Kapalua Plantation course carries a hefty fee of near $379 (although they gave us a discount to $329 when we played it the next day). It is a ridiculous price that I’ve become too accustomed to paying at the top courses across the country. Someday Kelsey will realize our 401k got invested in a few 4 hour rounds of golf. Anyone want to sponsor some of these rounds for me?

The Plantation Course- Kapalua

The Plantation course was well worth the experience. It was manicured to perfection, had some of the most fun greens I’ve ever putted on and was not anything like any of the other Hawaii resort courses I’ve played. My round was highlighted by a personal best 421 yard drive (downhill, downwind). I’ll still count it though.

Though the price tag may keep me away for a few years, I’m sure I’ll be back.
