An Early Retirement
I’m not a runner. My first half marathon 14 years ago I was passed by more 70yo grandmas than I can count. After being hoaxed into training for a half marathon a few months ago I can officially retire from the sport. The race was scheduled for tomorrow in Seattle but snow canceled us out. I wasn’t too upset. I woke up at 4am this morning and ran: just me, the wind, and the rain. There were no grandmas on the route to embarrass me. There was no fanfare at the finish line. In fact I don’t even know if I finished. My watch stopped working midway through the race. I think I ran somewhere between 13.0-13.2 miles: a race so pure it was timeless.
Lessons Learned
I often get accused for being a One Trick Pony. That used to bother me. Running made me accept my reality. Golf is what I love to do. There are some fringe benefits of running, like better health. I’m not sure if it’s worth it though. I did enjoy the several hours I had each week pounding pavement to listen to several golf books. I actually think my golf game will be better because of it.
Kelsey is a runner, always has been an always will be. After my 13.0-13.2 mile run this morning I got the following picture from Kelsey:
13.1 miles on a treadmill is incredible. She’s amazing. Next time I’ll let her have all of the fun.
State of My Golf Game
After finishing my 13.0-13.2 miles in timeless fashion I went golfing. Rainy 50 degree days are perfect for golf. Nobody else was on the course. I drove the ball as good as I ever have. I three putted 4 holes in a row on the back 9 though and barely broke 80. At some point I’ll figure this game out. Now that I’m retired from running I have a few more hours to practice at least.
About Me
I am a husband to an amazing wife, father to four beautiful kids, an above average golfer, a retired runner, and a champion pickleball player. My next goal is to be scratch golfer.
