Chambers Bay

After sitting through two 3 hour little league games per week for the last month I’m starting to wonder if I deserve a participation trophy. Both of my boys are into baseball right now. It’s a great sport. I’m honestly happy that they are playing it, but wonder how many years my cheerfulness will last. Midway through the season Kelsey gave me a reprieve and let me head to Chambers Bay for a day. Some golf outings are better than others and Chambers Bay did not disappoint. The course was beautiful and the weather was perfect. I do have to admit, some sports are better than others. Hopefully my boys will see the light some day.

Chambers Bay caused a shake up on my list of top 10 courses. The last time I played it was 2019. I remember being stunned back then, but the greens weren’t in the best shape after being recently replanted. I have played too many nice courses since then and Chambers Bay fell behind in my ranking of top courses. After playing it again however it has jumped up to #3 on my list of favorite courses.

My brother Brad and I played the course in 2019. He beat me by a few strokes after I took an 11 on a hole. It was the last time he will ever beat me. Feel free to read my article about Brad in the One Trick Pony vs A Trained Assassin.

Chambers Bay

This time I went with my friend Steve, who you can read about in my article Channel The Mamba, and my brother in law Nick (see Old Works). Nick will always drop what he’s doing to play a round of golf. That’s all you need in a friend.

Chambers Bay History

My Grandpa Barber was laid to rest in a cemetery across the street from Chambers Bay. I have been to Chambers Bay twice but have yet to visit Grandpa’s gravesite. He understands. I have plenty of excuses to go back up there and visit him.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, Chambers Bay was formerly a gravel pit that was transformed into a course that hosted the 2015 US open. Jordan Spieth won that year after Dustin Johnson three putted from 12’4” on the final hole.

Chambers Bay Greens

I remember watching the 2015 US Open and thinking that the greens looked worse than any greens I had ever seen. Chambers eventually replanted all of their greens and reopened in 2019. This year the greens were beautiful and rolled true. They weren’t as fast as I expected, but I imagine that changes greatly when it is close to tournament time.

When The Day is Done

We played 36 holes that day. Each hole seemed better than the last. I got an eagle during my second round. I shot a 78 the first round and an 82 the second round after 4 double bogeys on the last 9. Although physically drained it was an amazing trip. The pictures were some of my favorites I have taken of any course. Chambers Bay is a definite bucket list course for any golf enthusiast.
