A Face for Radio
Emails and messages came streaming into my blog and social media accounts last Sunday. My 1 minute and 12 seconds of fame in life was over. I was more shocked than anyone. Why would they put me on TV? I’m still trying to figure it out. Hours later I was still laughing that TNT/TBS had actually aired a clip of me and mentioned my blog. My friend Haley welcomed me back to reality. “Too bad you have a face for radio.”
The Story
Four weeks ago I got an email with the headline Turner Sports Request:Feature Idea. I opened it wondering how it had gotten through my spam filter. I quickly glanced through the email. No links to click on? They aren’t asking for my social security number? Not a Nigerian prince? I was confused but kept reading.
“I was hoping I could speak to you about a feature idea for the upcoming Match involving Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson, and Tom Brady that will be airing live at the end of May on TBS…My colleagues and I came across your blog…”. Which one of my friends would play a prank like this? I knew several.
I showed the email to Kelsey. She laughed. I texted it to my family…
The Interview
A few thoughts ran through my mind as I called Turner Sports back. I remember having someone from Ireland visit my blog back in September (probably Rory McIlroy). He may have tipped them off to GolferMD.com. Thought number two was that they really have to be reaching deep if they want me to be a part of a broadcast with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Bray, and Peyton Manning.
I had two Zoom interviews with Turner Sports. My only goal was not to say anything too dumb. I worried for weeks that I would have to erase my entire blog, get a new job, or move out of the country. I debated telling them not to air anything about me. At least they were asking me about topics I liked to talk about: Golf and Medicine.
I didn’t actually think they would air any clips of me. I definitely didn’t think they would mention my blog. Turns out they have some great editors at Turner Sports.
Callaway Golf contacted me after it aired. They asked me to be on one of their podcasts. I pinched myself wondering if it was real. Last week they had on Phil Mickelson and Amanda Balionis, two of the most popular figures in golf. This week I will be on. LOL. Fortunately, I have a face for radio (or podcasts).
Golfing Fame
Up until last week my Grandpa Fielding held the claim to fame for golf in our family. Once while playing hole number 12 at Sun Willows he told me the story of how he hit his ball at the same time that a plane was coming in for a landing. His ball barely flew over the top of the plane and landed on the fairway. Legendary.
I’m glad that I’ve finally gotten recognition for my golf game. Two days ago I went to the golf course with my wife. I hit my 7 iron on a par three into a bunker. 4 shots later and I was finally was on the green. 6 on a par 3. Well done GolferMD.
Maybe it’s a good thing I’m lousy at golf. After all, I have a face for radio.
